Erg Chebbi near Merzouga has the famous tall orange dunes with easier access and more camp options. Erg Chegaga, beyond M'Hamid El Ghizlane, is wilder and more remote - reached only by 4x4 or camel, with far fewer visitors. If you want iconic postcard dunes choose Chebbi; if you want raw, silent Sahara choose Chegaga.

The classic Marrakech-Merzouga circuit takes 3 days / 2 nights. With 4 to 5 days you travel at a calmer pace and add Ait Ben Haddou, the Todra Gorge, Taroudant or Essaouira. Trekking lovers can join camel treks of up to 7 days deep in the dunes. If you are short on time, 2-day tours from Agadir, Ouarzazate or M'Hamid still include a full night in the desert.

You reach the camp by camel or 4x4 before sunset, then enjoy a traditional dinner around the fire with Berber music under an incredible sky of stars. You sleep in a nomad-style tent with proper bedding and blankets, and wake up early for the unforgettable sunrise over the dunes.

October to April brings the most pleasant desert temperatures. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the sweet spots, with warm days and cool starry nights. Summer tours run too, with adapted schedules and earlier starts.
